I tried to take another “cat with my current read” photo but Taurus said “no, the book is Mine now”. Then he saw me making this post and cracked the sads and climbed off lol

Luckily I have the ebook on my phone too 🤣

Booklr Reads Australian | Book #2

I’ve finished I am the Messenger (nice ending) and started the ebook for Our Chemical Hearts (fun so far, quirky dialogues my beloved).

My first book for the booklr reads australian challenge!

Without Further Ado surprised me a little! I hoped I’d like it but I wasn’t sure since I’m pretty picky about romances. But I ended up absolutely loving it. I think partly because I read it at a really good time (it’s set in a warm sydney autumn and i’m currently in a warm brisbane winter), but also it’s just very funny and charming and so easy to read. Plus, I haven’t ever actually seen Much Ado About Nothing so some of the big plot moments were completely unexpected for me, even though they mirror Shakespeare. But the biggest reason is maybe that it didn’t always feel super romancy. Like yeah I knew Willa would end up with the guy by the end but there was so much time spent on her relationships with her friends and family and it was so much about her own growth that the romance almost felt secondary. There were even a few moments when I felt like if the twist was that Willa realised she was arospec I wouldn’t have been surprised. She was very relatable in certain aspects lmao.

JOMP BPC - August 13th - Published This Year

this was an interesting sapphic thriller that I read at the start of the month by one of my favourite Australia YA writers for Booklr Reads Australian

Booklr Reads Australian | Book #3

I’m finally starting Sabriel! I’ve wanted to read this for a long time. If I end up liking it, I’ll get the anime paperback covers which look super cool.

And I did not enjoy Our Chemical Hearts. It was so bad.

Review: Because of You by Pip Harry
Rating: 5/5 #LoveOzY
A

“Books can save anyone. If they’re the right ones."

Because of You is a beautiful novel about two teenage girls in Sydney, Australia. Tiny is homeless, constantly battered with anxiety, and desperate not to succumb to her thoughts. Nola is a pampered princess, but when she volunteers with a writing group for the homeless, she begins to learn there’s more to life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I hate that I didn’t read it sooner. I saw it in bookshops so many times and just never gave it much thought. But this was a beautiful story about the fragility of life, mental health, friendship - and how a bloody good story can make all that a bit easier to bear.

Tiny was easy to love from the very first chapter and it was equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking to learn her story. Nola was a little harder to like at first, especially given the storyline with her parents - a butch lesbian and gay man who decided to have Nola together through IVF - but by the end of the book, I was just so proud of her.

I’d recommend this to any fans of Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour or anyone just looking for a book populated by brilliant, interesting characters.

Saturday Check-In - August 19th

three weeks into the challenge, things have been feeling a bit quiet, haven’t they? i dunno about anyone else but my reading has certainly slowed down this week. even though I’ve been enjoying the books I’ve been reading, I’ve been finding it hard to focus on them in any sort of steady way

but, I have gotten through 2 and a half books this week. I finished The Comedienne’s Guide to Pride by Hayli Thomson which I thoroughly enjoyed, and Because of You by Pip Harry was a beautiful story. I’m also partway through Where You Left Us by Rhiannon Wilde (which I just found out releases in the US next month!)

I also gave Sadie Starr’s Guide to Starting Over by Miranda Luby a go but the eating disorder story line in that was a bit much for me so I’ve DNF-ed it for now

but please, let me know what you’ve been reading this week! and also take a look at this discussion post I put up during the week that hasn’t had much response yet <3 and here’s hoping week 4 of the challenge proves a bit more fruitful and active for us all ^.^

I’ve definitely had a slow down on my end, partially because I remembered I have a book club book that I need to read this month too so i’ve been splitting my time

But i’m hoping to finish Some Shall Break today or tomorrow (it’s so good so far! i’m stressed!) and then get at least one more of my library books read before the month’s over. It’ll depend how crazy my first week of school is so everyone pray for a “just read the syllabus and introduce yourself” week lol 😂

booklr reads australian replies i also have like. half a review written for the mother in law so hopefully will get that posted as well
